CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION 2020
Raffles College students, staffs and lecturers celebrated the incoming “Year of the Rat” together on Tuesday, 28th January 2020. The year of rat in Chinese zodiac represents good luck and prosperity.
This year, Raffles College wanted to do something special to mark this occasion. We invited lion dance crew to perform inside the college area and invited all students and staffs to celebrate. The dress code for the occasion was red, which symbolizes good luck in Chinese culture.
In the afternoon, all staffs and lecturers joined together for lunch. It began with Yee Shang ceremony or known as the Prosperity Toast. It is a mixed shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients, where all staffs and lecturers joined together to mix the vegetables using chopsticks. Yee Shang is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor.
Multi Purpose Room and areas around the college were decorated with paper lanterns and red cards bearing symbols associated with the festival. This was truly a day to remember for our college community, and a wonderful opportunity for all of our students to learn about diversity and experience various aspects of Chinese culture.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this celebration. May wealth and prosperity come your way. Happy Chinese New Year 2020!
